Pediatric Dentist 28269 | How to Keep Your Baby’s Teeth Free from Tooth Decay

Did you know that early childhood caries or tooth decay is one of the most common chronic infectious diseases among kids? Others call it baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries and it can be caused by passing acid-producing bacteria from parents or caregivers to babies through saliva or the frequent exposure of a child’s teeth and gums to any food or liquid other than water. Your child’s pediatric dentist 28269 will tell you that tooth decay can be costly to treat if this isn’t prevented. Check out these tips to keep your baby’s teeth free from tooth decay:

Keep Your Baby’s Mouth Clean

From birth to 12 months, be sure to keep your child’s mouth clean by using a clean baby washcloth to wipe the gums. As soon as you notice the first tooth coming out, use a soft baby toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice to gently brush it.  When your child is 1 to 3 years old, be sure to brush their teeth at least 2 times per day (after breakfast and before bed) for at least 2 minutes.

Don’t Put Your Baby to Bed with Food or a Bottle

Aside from the fact that this will expose your children’s teeth to sugars, this will also put them at risk for choking and ear infections.

Teach Your Kid to Drink from a Cup as Soon as Possible

As soon as your children turn 1, teach them to drink from the cup because doing so won’t cause the liquid to collect around the teeth and they won’t be able to take the cup to bed.
